The Bighorn River Fly Fishing Experience

Thermopolis is a small resort town nestled in
the foothills of the Owl Creek Mountains and
where the Big Horn River "runs through it". It
is truly a western town full of history of
Butch Cassidy and his "Wild Bunch", ranchers,
farmers, Native Americans and the altitude
(4500') is higher than the population (3400).
It is renowned for it's World's Largest
Mineral Hot Springs, which you may soak in
after a full day of casting to and fighting with
Bighorn trout. With plenty of motels,
restaurants and commercial airports within 30
miles you will be well taken care of with
western hospitality.

It is located:

Come and experience the rewards of this
blue-ribbon fishery that produces some of the
largest rainbow, brown and cutthroat trout in
the west. This is the first stretch of the Big
Horn, which begins after the long journey of
the Wind River at the "wedding of the
waters". Lewis and Clark named the Big Horn
on their westward expedition, unknowingly
after the Shoshone Indians named it the
Wind. So it was decided to just change the
name at a logical geological point just north of
the Wind River Canyon and Wind River Indian
Reservation.

This tail water is a cold-water stream for
almost 30 miles and then is too warm to
support trout. This is truly a dry fly
fisherman's dream. With midges coming off
almost year round and baetis, caddis, trico's,
pmd's, green drake's, hopper's, beetles and
ants there is always something that have them
looking up or rising. However, with the
abundant sculpin, trout fry, crayfish, leeches,
minnows, aquatic worms, scuds, cranefly and
nymphs this river provides anglers with great
results using streamer and nymphing
techniques. This rich food source fattens
trout quickly with the average fish caught
being 16-18 inches with several being over 20".

The trip begins with one of our experienced
guides meeting you at the designated time at
your motel, tent or RV. You will then be taken
to a fishing access to start your memorable
adventure through mostly private property
making floating the best way to truly
experience this river. You will go in style in a
drift boat designed specifically for the fly
fisherman. You will encounter different
situations to challenge your skills as an angler
and giving you ample opportunities to hook
into some spectacular fish. For those who like
to wade we will stop on some of the many
islands and in runs. For the "hard-core" angler
you will shove a sandwich down with one hand
while casting with the other and for the more
relaxed angler we will set up a shore side
lunch site and relax on the bank with tables
and chairs for a Big Horn River picnic. After
lunch we will enjoy another half day of tight
lines and beautiful scenery. With another
HUGE benefit being that you will almost
always be one of the only boats on the river.
